What is a bridesmaid?
They are also called Maids of Honour. They are essential to the wedding. The bride chooses her main bridesmaid, and then all the other ones. They support the bride, along with the wedding planner, in some of the wedding preparations. They are always here to cheer the bride up and to organise the famous hen party… In France, this trend is getting more and more popular. French women love the American wedding style!
What are the bridesmaids’ characteristics?
Bridesmaids are more and more present at French weddings. Brides want to have a long line of girls by their side for their wedding. Along with the groomsmen, they walk the aisle together and surround the couple during the ceremony or the photography sessions, which are a little bit “crazy”, to keep a very funny memory of the wedding.
Bridesmaids also wear the same clothes; the same dress, or the same color of dress, the same shoes, the same bouquet… Everything matches the bride’s criteria. The bridesmaids can be her sisters, her close cousins, her friends and, of course, her best friend. The latter is often the main bridesmaid.
In France, we all know our little maids of honor, children generally, but real bridesmaids are adults only. According to the American tradition, they even have to be single, just like the groomsmen.
Who will you choose for your wedding?
Now that you have started to prepare everything, you are wondering if you want maids of honor, children or bridesmaids…? I must confess: I’m still hesitant myself. I like watching those little kids walking the aisle and throwing flowers everywhere or carrying the rings. But I also like those bridesmaids with their matching dresses and their crazy photos that make wonderful memories! So, what do you think about mixing the two together? The more the merrier!
